The Pain Playbook

Somatic healing. Nervous system regulation. Trauma stored in the body. You've probably seen this language everywhere lately. iI went from niche therapy-speak to mainstream wellness content in what felt like a year.
There's real substance underneath the trend, if you get past the buzzwords. Let's actually talk about what your nervous system is doing, and why calling it "broken" gets it wrong.
Protection. Not comfort. Its whole job is to scan for threat and respond accordingly. That's it. When something genuinely threatening happens — an injury, chronic stress, emotional overwhelm — it ramps up and stays ramped up, because as far as it's concerned, staying alert is the safe move.
The problem isn't that this system is broken. The problem is it sometimes keeps running the same protective program long after the original threat is gone.
An old injury heals completely on a scan, but the area still feels tight, guarded, sensitive. A stressful period ends, but your shoulders never quite came back down. Pain shows up in response to things that shouldn't hurt this much.
That's not your body malfunctioning. That's a nervous system still protecting you against something that isn't there anymore, because nobody gave it a clear enough signal that it's safe to stand down.
Graded exposure — gradually showing your nervous system, through real experience, that a movement or area is safe again
Manual therapy that works with your nervous system's state, not just the tissue
Breathwork and genuine downregulation practices — actual physiological shifts, not just distraction
Consistency — this isn't a one-session fix, it's built the same way the original pattern was: repeatedly, over time
If you're 40+ carrying old compensation patterns: years of your nervous system protecting the same area adds up. It's never too late to retrain it, but the sooner, the better.
If you're on a GLP-1: your body is genuinely under physiological stress right now from the metabolic shift. Nervous system support matters more during transition periods, not less.
If you're post-surgical: surgery is a real threat event as far as your nervous system is concerned. Recovery includes retraining it, not just healing the tissue.
If your hormones are shifting: estrogen plays a genuine regulatory role in nervous system function — as it declines, your baseline stress reactivity can shift too, which is physiology, not a personal failing.
Your nervous system isn't working against you. It's just still running old instructions. That can change.
