The Pain Playbook

You know your body. And at some point, you've probably had a moment where someone in a white coat made you doubt that. They told you it's stress, it's anxiety, lose some weight and it'll go away, you're fine, the tests came back normal.
If that's ever happened to you, here's what I want you to know: your pain was real the entire time. And being dismissed didn't just feel bad, it may have actually made things worse.
Being told your pain isn't real — or isn't worth investigating — doesn't just delay a diagnosis. It changes your nervous system's state. Feeling unheard and unsafe activates the same threat response that keeps chronic pain patterns running. In other words: dismissal doesn't just fail to help. It can actively contribute to the problem.
And this isn't rare. Conditions like endometriosis, fibromyalgia, hypermobility spectrum disorders, and various autoimmune conditions have historically taken years — sometimes a decade or more — to properly diagnose, with women disproportionately affected.
Pain deserves real interpretation. Not "it's probably nothing." Not "you're just stressed." An actual investigation into what your body is telling you, and if the first answer doesn't add up, the right response is more questions, not less concern.
If You've Been Dismissed Before
Bring a specific, written timeline of your symptoms to appointments — vague descriptions are easier to dismiss than documented patterns
Ask directly: what would rule this out, and what's the next step if this doesn't
A second opinion isn't overreacting. It's advocating
Trust what you're feeling, even while you're still looking for the answer
If you're on a GLP-1: many people spent years being told their metabolic struggles were a willpower problem before real treatment existed. That history is worth naming.
If your hormones are shifting: perimenopause symptoms have been dismissed as "just aging" or "in your head" for decades which is part of why the current shift in how seriously it's being taken matters so much.
If you're post-surgical: post-op pain that doesn't match the expected timeline sometimes gets waved off as overreacting. It's worth pushing for a real look.
If you're 40+: chronic pain gets written off as "normal aging" more than it should. Normal and inevitable aren't the same thing.
You are the expert on your own body. We're here to be the expert on the system that explains what it's telling you.
